How do birds deal with this problem?
When looking at this photograph of a Brown Skua you will notice that on the left wing the covert feathers are lifted off the surface.
Our working hypothesis was that these coverts were actually able to prevent the spreading of the eddy, thereby working as eddy-flaps.
