When seeing this, of course we became interested in the actual flow pattern, so we used smoke for flow visualization and got this pattern.
The flaps restrict the eddy to the hind part of the aerofoil.
In front of the flaps, however, we found a trapped vortex, that fills in the angle between the aerofoil and the flaps.
